6.4 Deinitions. For the purposes of this document, the following deinitions apply.
6.4.1 Veriication. Veriication (section 4), in the context of this speciication equates to the contractor s
quality assurance program for validating the content of the manuals and checklists. Suggested validation
methods include:
a. Actual performance. Using production conigured equipment, hands-on performance of the
procedure using the technical instructions as written.
b. Simulation. Using production conigured equipment and the manual procedures and checklists,
simulate the actions required by the task steps.
c. Table top analysis. Primarily for nonprocedural data, compare the technical content to source
data to ensure the technical accuracy and depth of coverage.
6.4.2 Interchangeable Item. An item which possesses such functional and physical characteristics as to be
equivalent in performance, reliability, and maintainability, to another item of similar or identical purposes,
and is capable of being exchanged for the other item without selection for it or performance and without
alteration of the items themselves or adjoining items, except for adjustment (reference DoD 4100.39-M).
6.4.3 Substitute Item. An item which possesses such functional and physical characteristics as to be capable
of being exchanged for another only under speciied conditions or for particular applications and without
alteration of the items themselves or of adjoing items. This term is synonymous with the phrase "one way
interchangeability", such as item B can be interchanged in all applications for item A, but item A cannot be
used in all applications requiring item B (reference DoD 4100.39-M).
